The Rare Red Narra Wood: Best for Embellishing Jewelry Box Large Enough for Your Trinkets

May 23rd, 2011 by wys

It is not very difficult to get yourself a jewelry box large enough to keep your jewelry collection, if you know what to look for. A large jewelry box helps you sort out and store your extensive collection in sets based on color, metal, or type of jewelry. You will find it much easier to locate the pieces you want to match with a particular outfit.

Ideally a box that big will not look out of place on your dresser only if it is a beautifully handcrafted piece with some evocative wood inlay work like marquetry done on it. The evocative designs on the jewelry box should take attention away from its size! If you are not on a tight budget, you could buy a box that is entirely made out a rare or exotic wood like the Red Narra. But if you are looking for something good but inexpensive, you can still get a beautifully carved box of white mahogany with some exquisite art work done on it. This will work out much cheaper as the wood is locally available as opposed to rare wood, which is imported.

The Red Narra Wood (Pterocarpus indicus) is predominantly found in northern Australasia and Asia - Burma, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, etc and it is revered as the National Tree of the Philippines. It is part of the Fabaceae or Leguminosae pea family. Burmese Rosewood, Tnug, Sena, Andaman Redwood, Asana, Kaibocca Wood, Sonokembang, and Angsana are some of the more common names of the Red Narra.

The beautiful Amboyna burl comes from the same tree. The trunk of the tree measures about 2 m. in diameter and the tree grows really tall to a height of approximately 40 m.. You will find on most of these trees, buttresses that extend upward and outward all around the tree. It is a very hard, dense, and heavy wood.

The most common colors of the hardwood are deep orange red, rose, reddish tan, and in some places it is even said to be purple. At different angles, when held up to light, a piece of this wood reveals a marked change in appearance. When you submerge this wood in water, it turns a lovely opalescent color; this is due to a substance that is said to naturally occur in the wood cells.

Red Narra Wood is great for marquetry designs because of its diverse patterns and intense colors that make it an absolutely unique wood. An intricately carved wooden jewelry box with fascinating marquetry designs may turn out to be the best gift you’ve given yourself and your jewelry!
