Mamarua NZ Jewellery Upcycles Unwanted Materials To Create Unique Necklaces

Well Mamarua NZ Jewelry all began as simply a experiment, truly 1 or 2 disjointed thoughts, some scratchy drawings on the odd scrap of paper. I seemed to be always fossicking to find that special little something for a chum that had integrity, was NZ jewellery made to gave you that warm mawkish feeling. And every year, there was a definite lack of Xmas decorations that meant something to us, with our love for New Zealand-made Pacific design.

I had a creative itch that needed scratching and added to that was the pull of being my own boss at Mamarua. I realised I didnt want to consider all the things I needed to do but never really get them done, so with help from a brilliant young illustrator and lots of folk guiding and supporting my vision, my imprecise ideas of Mamarua began to turn into reality.

Gorgeous hand-carved originals were eventually finalised, and the method of finding a suitable molding strategy was in progress. Hugely important to us were the materials our fledgling business had to be viable. The possibility of recycling something that would otherwise fill our valuable landfills became something of a compulsion, so after tons of experimenting we discovered that we could get the specified effect with the use of recycled material. Eighteen months later on in October 2007, Mamaruas Mementos of the South Pacific were launched.

Provoked by our South Pacific environment, the 1st Mamarua range includes three designs Aroha, Koru and Tapa. The 3 NZ jewelry designs are offered as recycled resin souvenirs and pendants and recycled rubber pendants.

Mamarua to us means 2 mas, and thats just what we are : two working mums who’ve pooled our talents and resources to steer our creative energies in a new direction thats ours alone. Mamaruas kaupapa ( mission ) includes not only planning beautiful mementos harking back to our Pacific heritage, but also producing them 100% in Aotearoa, using all recycled materials with eco friendly packing.

We are really proud that our mementos are made in New Zealand and employ eco friendly elements, establishing once again that sustainability can be shocking!
