Buyin Cubic Zirconia Pendants? Know Their Background

At the time Marilyn Monroe sang ‘Diamonds are a girl’s best friends’ she could have been talking for plenty of girls. But then again, she was singing during a period before cubic zirconia. Monroe was singing during the time when expensive diamonds were over the budget of some, so diamonds were truly just the best friend of the blessed few. At the time Monroe was singing, there was lots of demand for imitation diamonds, yet items were not quality and also difficult to locate. Who would have thought, then, that a pair of guys in white coats in a lab would change the jewellery scene, kicking off a boom of product sales of cubic zirconia pendants and earrings which would turn cubic zirconia into a desirable jewel in its own right?

Clearly, the two scientists had more useful things to be looking into compared to the trivialities of the world of jewellery. They were really seeking to make cubic zirconia, which had (and has) only actually been found once in its naturally created state, synthetically to use as a simulation ruby in laser technology. It was in the 1970s that they were firstly in a position to produce cubic zirconia to use in lasers. It was rapidly noticed that cubic zirconia was much like diamonds both aesthetically and gemologically, and so it rapidly became popular in jewellery.

Cubic zirconia pendants and earrings are so popular today since they actually are very similar looking to diamonds. It’s absolutely no exaggeration that hardly any jewellers can actually tell the difference between the two using just the human eye alone. This particular benefit is coupled with the fact that cubic zirconia costs about a tenth of the cost of natural diamond.

The scientific world further aided the case of cubic zirconia pendants, earrings and bracelets in the nineties, by bettering the quality of the gem. An incredibly thin layer was added to the gem, called DLC or Amorphous Diamond. This resulted in the gem becoming much more hard and lustrous and therefore much more diamond-like.

Thus now, when you buy your cubic zirconia pendants, earrings or some other jewellery, you will be aware that you are wearing an incredible little bit of gorgeous jewellery that is available solely because of the miracles of science!
